Welcome to Week 5!! We’ve reached the midpoint of the season and conference races are heating up. There’s a big game out in Algonquin tonight so let’s get to it!
I think many Jacobs Golden Eagle fans went to bed super anxious in preparation for Cary-Grove and Homecoming. It has to be much worse for Caz Zyks and company.
Coach Bill Mitz said before the season began if Jacobs wanted to take the next step and become vital contenders, they’d have to knock off one of the area’s top teams, that being either Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake South or Prairie Ridge. Today Jacobs gets its crack at Cary-Grove to send that message.
It looks like Cary-Grove might be the easiest of the three but that’s no easy task. The Golden Eagles are looking for a big shot in the arm after last year’s 49-21 loss to Cary in which Jacobs trailed 35-0 at the half. And Cary hasn’t dropped a game to Jacobs since 2001. Cary’s ready. Jacobs’ defense is the key to the game as the Cary-option will be tough to stop. This is Jacobs’ first true test this season and I think they’ll be ready for the challenge in the Five Cents Game of the Week, which should be a playoff atmosphere at the very least, something Cary knows very well.
What quietly could be a very good game is Burlington and Richmond-Burton. Oddly enough, both team’s mascots are the Rockets. Sounds like a classic Cold War battle to me. Something tells me they should have played this game on an aircraft carrier in the Caribbean Sea. R-B comes winners of 14-straight Big Northern East games, whereas Burlington is coming off a convincing win over Stillman Valley. They nearly beat Sycamore two weeks ago (lost 20-17) so Burlington’s Rocket team should be poised and confident to take the BNE Apollo Rocket.
A battle of Crystal Lake is occurring and yet nobody is talking about it. Crystal Lake Central (3-1) and Prairie Ridge (4-0) square off at PR in what use to be a high-stakes Fox Valley Fox matchup. Now it’s a FVC crossover but the rivalry should reek its normal self except PR should run over Tiger. The Wolves have outscored their opponents 195-16. No wonder why they’re No. 2 in Class 6A AP rankings.
Of the 4 teams Streamwood has beaten this season, only Elgin has a single victory. The Maroons (1-3) defeated Dundee-Crown (0-4) in Week 1 and the Sabres defeated the Chargers the week after. Streamwood by far has the easiest schedule in the Upstate. Next week it gets even better when the play win-less St. Charles East. There is no fear of Streamwood qualifying for the playoffs this year. They should be 6-0 after next week. I just worry for them when the play the likes or Larkin, Bartlett and Batavia for the final three games of the season. They’re definitely going to get a test of the playoffs early this year.
A battle of 0-4’s will end with someone grabbing their first win of the season while someone else will fall to 0-5. That’s what’s happening at the D-C Bowl Friday between Dundee-Crown and Huntley. I told long-time chain gang member Fred Steinhaus on Facebook this week Charger would end their losing streak, which has risen to 21. D-C is getting back sophomore running back Cody Lane tonight and he’s quite the beast for a sophomore. Huntley has had one of the toughest schedules in the state to start a season. The Raiders faced CL Central, Kaneland, CL South and Prairie Ridge in previous weeks. That might have a little to do with being 0-4… good grief!
And as usual, every year there wouldn’t be a football game in Elgin without the Town Jug at stake between Larkin and Elgin. The Maroons have held it for the past two years and with Dennis Moore expected to play for Elgin, it’s going to be tough for Larkin to get their 31st win in the series (30-19 vs. Elgin).
And please, Brad Walovitch, how about 4 interceptions tonight?
