Week 6 signifies the two-thirds mark of the regular season in high school football and one can’t look past the big game at Ken Bruhn Field between 5-0 Crystal Lake South and 5-0 Prairie Ridge.
Jacobs (5-0) might have some influence during the next three weeks on who really wins the conference, but the Wolves and Gators are battling out for FVC Valley supremacy. And while it’s a little strange Cary doesn’t have a say in it this year, PR and CLS will live up to the hype tonight at 7:15 p.m. at Ken Bruhn Field.
Get there early and gobble up a seat where you can. It’ll be a big crowd tonight. Last time these two hooked up, PR rolled to a huge win last year (37-10) in the quarterfinals of the Class 6A playoffs. Gator got them in the regular season game (24-20) last year but this is going to be a tight battle to end, this I can assure you.
Right now, if I had an All-area team to put together, on offense Marian’s Chris Streveler would be my quarterback. Caz Zyks (Jacobs) would be in my backfield along with his buddy Kyle Wright (Jacobs) and the South defense would be my monsters keeping my opposing offense out of the end zone.
PR is the AP’s No. 1 ranked team in 6A and they are supremely athletic running the ball. Running back Jordan Getzelman is one of the leading rushers in the area and quarterback Nick Nissen can both run and throw pretty good. PR’s defense is allowing just a little over 3 points per game but they’ve played an easier schedule to Crystal Lake South’s, which has seen a couple of good teams in Cary-Grove, Crystal Lake Central and pass-happy McHenry.
I’ll give the edge to the South defense because they’ve been extra special all season. Except for a kickoff return in Week 1 against Thornridge, the Gators have given up 25 points all season. They will have to contain, but with their pressure and ability to stop the run, it’s going to come down to the PR defense. If the PR defense can stop the Gator offense which is better than you think, may be it’s PR’s game.
Jacobs and Streamwood should have no problem staying undefeated. Their big games come next week. So comeback to me next week as Jacobs takes on PR while Streamwood gets 5-0 Geneva.
South Elgin and Bartlett should be of gladiator proportions over at South Elgin’s new football arena. The Storm are in desperate need of a win while Bartlett wants to stay near the top of the UEC Valley.
The one game of significant note is St. Edward and Marian Central. I alluded to Chris Streveler earlier that he’d be my starting quarterback on my all-area team. This is true. Streveler, a junior, may be have had the best game of his varsity career two weeks ago in a 21-20 win over state-ranked Montini at the time. Not only did he throw for over 200 yards, he ran for over 100, threw for 2 touchdowns and ran for 1. The Green Wave will have their hands full trying to contain the junior QB which is no easy task. Ask Montini.
Another 8-2 week puts me at a record of 41-9. If I were to surpass the Chicago Bulls 72-win mark, for the remaining four weeks I’ll have to go 32-8, 8-2 every week from here on out. Can The Five Cents do it? That’s a lot of pressure. We have to remember in a 100 games played that season (including playoffs), the Bulls went 87-13. But that’s basketball. This is prep football.
And somebody please tell me why Jacobs isn’t ranked in the Class 7A AP Poll???
